Just hours before concluding the White March phase—during which over 19,369 passengers and around 7,664 pieces of luggage were handled—Lima Airport Partners (LAP), in coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Communications, is officially launching operations at the new Jorge Chávez International Airport.
This Sunday, June 1, the complete transfer of all air operations to the new terminal will take place. A 12-hour operational pause has been scheduled—from 1:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.—to carry out a final, orderly, and safe move of aircraft, equipment, and personnel. This transition marks a historic and logistical milestone, the result of more than two decades of sustained work and collaboration between the State, LAP, and various stakeholders in the airport ecosystem.
"Today, Peru marks a new milestone. The inauguration of the new Jorge Chávez International Airport is a world-class achievement—a symbol of the joint effort between the State, the private sector, and all Peruvians to better connect our country with the world," stated the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte.
The new terminal, three times the size of the current Jorge Chávez Airport, represents an investment of over US$2.4 billion, combining capital from LAP and third parties. It is a comprehensive transformation of the nation’s airport infrastructure. Spanning 935 hectares, it features state-of-the-art technology in security, connectivity, and passenger experience. In addition to increasing airport capacity to 40 million passengers annually, the new Jorge Chávez is designed to become a true regional air hub.
"The terminal’s inauguration is a milestone not only for Fraport but also for Peru and South America. Our goal is to position Lima as one of the continent’s leading hubs, boosting tourism, air cargo transportation, and connectivity for all Peruvians. The opening of this landmark project clearly symbolizes our commitment to the country. Together with our subsidiary LAP and our partners, we have built not just a new terminal, but also South America’s first Airport City—integrating air transport with logistics, retail, and hospitality," said Dr. Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport.
Its strategic location on South America's west coast, combined with its modern infrastructure, positions it as a key connection point between South America, North America, Europe, and Asia. This new hub will not only enhance air traffic but also contribute to the economic development of Callao and the nation.
"The inauguration of the new terminal is the result of years of planning, construction, and teamwork. This airport will generate around 121,000 jobs, directly benefiting nearby communities. Moreover, it will serve as a key engine for the country’s economic growth, creating opportunities for future generations, fostering business, and promoting tourism recovery," stated Juan José Salmón, CEO of LAP.
LAP reaffirms its commitment to Peru and all travelers by offering not only a modern and efficient airport but also a travel experience that meets the highest international standards. The vision of an airport city is becoming a reality: a new Jorge Chávez that connects, empowers, and represents Peru to the world.
